What is ICC Certification?
The International Code Council, or ICC, is an organization that develops codes and standards for the building and construction industries. The I-Codes developed by ICC are a set of comprehensive building safety and fire prevention codes designed to set minimum standards for safe construction of homes, schools and commercial buildings. ICC also offers a certification program for contractors and various types of construction and safety industry professionals, including plumbing and electrical inspectors, plans examiners, and other building safety professionals.
Building and construction safety inspection has become highly specialized, with the result that ICC offers 37 different certifications for certified code safety professionals. Aside from Residential (B1) and Commercial (B2) building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspectors, ICC also offers certification exams for electrical, plumbing and mechanical plans examiners, residential fire sprinkler inspectors, permit inspectors, zoning inspectors, energy conservation, green building, and coastal and floodplain construction inspectors.
ICC also offers UST underground storage and AST above-ground storage certifications. There are seven national UST and AST certification exams, including installation, retrofitting, decommissioning, and Class A and Class B systems operator, as well as over 30 state certification exams.
California, Minnesota and Louisiana all require state certifications for inspectors and examiners. However, the state exams for California and Minnesota are designed to be substantially equivalent to ICC certifications, and if you pass the state exam, you can apply to receive the equivalent ICC certification. The exams for Louisiana reflect the current standards of the state, and are not equivalent to ICC certifications.
ICC offers 23 certifications for various contractor and trade professions, including building contractor, residential building contractor, journeyman plumber, master plumber, maintenance electrician, and low-voltage electrician. Certification involves passing a comprehensive written or computer-based exam on the code standards for that area. That certification is just one part of becoming of becoming a licensed contractor or tradesman. You still have to meet any experience requirements or other prerequisites and fill out an application for a license with your state or local licensing agency.
