I am licensed as a salesperson in another state. Do I still have to take the California exam?

Do I have to live in California to be able to apply for a License?
No. But out-of-State applicants must submit a Consent to Service of Process form. You need to request DRE Form RE 234, complete, sign, notarize and submit it with the original or renewal application.
What happens after I finish my Qualifying courses?
You will be issued a certificate of completion, when you've successfully passed each course. Submit all three certificates to the DRE along with your application for the State exam.
How long are Qualifying course certificates good for?
There is no time limitation. They are good forever.
Will the State give me time to prepare after I get my notice?
No. You will be scheduled for the first available date on or after the date you indicate on your application. You need to make sure you are ready by that date.
How many questions are on the exam?
There are 150 multiple choice questions.
Are there any time restrictions?
Yes. The maximum time allowed to take the exam is 3 hours and 15 minutes.
What score do I need to pass?
The minimum passing score is 70% or 105 of 150 questions need to be answered correctly.

 

How long does it take to get my exam results?
Normally, they will be mailed to you within 5 working days after the examination.

What happens if I fail the test?
The State will send you the score and an exam form, which you should fill out and send back with a $60.00 re-exam fee.
Can I re-schedule an exam?
Yes, but you have to pay a fee: $15 - first request, $30 - each subsequent.
How many times can I take the State exam?
As many as you can schedule during the two-year period following the date of the original application. If you wish to take the exam after the 2 years, you must file a new application.
Can I take a State exam in Spanish?
No, the State offers exams only in English.
May I work as a salesperson on my own?
No. The salesperson license authorizes real estate activity only if you are employed by a licensed broker.
Can I pay for reexamination by a credit card?
Yes. DRE accepts credit card payment by phone, fax Or mail. For further info, call 916-227-0900. The fax Number is 916-227-0925.
I am licensed as a salesperson in another state. Do I still have to take the California exam?
Yes. California does not have reciprocity agreements with other states.
