What is the difference between the salesperson's and broker's exams?
Most questions on the salesperson's exam are fair game for the broker's exam, but the brokers have some additional very long and difficult questions, especially on real estate finance and practice.

Is an exam prep course required by the DRE?
No, but we think it's indispensable. The broker's exam is widely agreed to be much more difficult than most real estate qualifying courses.

What activities if any, can be substituted for a licensed salesperson's experience?
You can substitute activities such as loan underwriter, escrow or title officer, subdivider, contractor or speculative builder, real property appraiser. Submit DRE Form RE 227 for approval.

Do I have to live in California to be able to apply for a broker's License?
No. But out-of-State applicants must submit a Consent to Service of Process form. You need to request DRE Form RE 234, complete, sign, notarize and submit it with the original or renewal application.

Is US citizenship required to apply for a broker's license?
No, but a proof of legal presence in the United States is required. The documents (i.e., birth certificate, resident alien card, etc.) must be submitted with a State Public benefits Statement (RE 205) before a license will be issued.

I am licensed in another State. Can I get the California exam waived?
No. California has no reciprocity agreements with other states.

How long does it take the State to schedule an exam date?
Approximately two weeks.

What is the DRE fee for the broker's exam?
It is $95.00 (as of 1/1/97).

Will the State give me time to prepare after I get my notice?
No. You will be scheduled for the first available date on or after the date you indicate on your application. You need to make sure you are ready by that date.

How many questions are on the exam?
There are 200 multiple-choice questions.

How long is the broker's exam?
Five hours (two sessions of 2.5 hours each on the same day).

What score do I need to pass?
The minimum passing score is 75% or 150 of 200 questions need to be answered correctly.

What happens if I fail the test?
The State will send you the score and an exam form, which you should fill out and send back with a $95.00 re-exam fee.

Can I re-schedule an exam?
Yes, but you have to pay a fee: $20 - first request, $30 - each subsequent.

How many times can I take the State exam?
As many as you can schedule during the two-year period following the date of the original application. If you wish to take the exam after the 2 years, you must file a new application.

Can I take a State exam in Spanish?
No, the State offers exams only in English.

Can I get a refund or credit from the DRE for any fees?
No. These fees are not refundable.

Can I pay for reexamination by a credit card?
Yes. DRE accepts credit card payment by phone, fax Or mail. For further info, call 916-227-0900. The fax: 916-227-0925.

Are there any other State fees?
The DRE license fee depends on several factors. You will need to check with the DRE for the most recent fee schedule.

How long will my license be valid?
All real estate licenses are issued for four years.

Are there continuing education (CE) requirements after I receive my license?
Yes. You need to request a copy of the DRE's most recent brochure "Instructions to License Applicants" to get the detailed information.

I am handicapped. Can I request special accommodations at the exam site?
Yes. You will need to submit a letter from your doctor when you apply for the exam.

Do I have to take the qualifying courses again, if I fail the exam?
No! Your courses are valid forever.
